Sleeping pill addiction and dependency affects hundreds of thousands of UK adults, primarily from Z-drugs (zopiclone, zolpidem) and benzodiazepines prescribed for insomnia. Physical dependency can develop within as little as 2–4 weeks of nightly use. Stopping sleeping pills suddenly can cause severe withdrawal including seizures. Free NHS support for sleeping pill dependency is available in Head of Muir. Call Frank on 0300 123 6600 or speak to your GP.

Zopiclone and zolpidem (Z-drugs) were developed as safer alternatives to benzodiazepines for insomnia but carry similar dependency risks with prolonged use. After 2–4 weeks of nightly use, the brain adapts and natural sleep mechanisms are disrupted — stopping causes severe rebound insomnia and withdrawal symptoms including anxiety, sweating, tremors, and in severe cases, seizures. This makes stopping very difficult without support.
Safe management of sleeping pill dependency in Head of Muir involves a very gradual dose reduction — usually by converting to an equivalent dose of diazepam and then reducing over weeks to months. The single most effective long-term treatment for insomnia is CBTI (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Insomnia), which produces better long-term results than medication without the risk of dependency. Ask your GP to refer you to CBTI services in Head of Muir.
